‘Sheng xiao’ or the Chinese Zodiac as it is known in English is a well recognized tradition in Chinese culture. This unique custom was formed and passed down dating back to Han Dynasty around 200BC. In 1981 the People’s Republic of China began issuing the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals on gold and silver commemorative coins honoring this Han custom.
