1987 was the Chinese Zodiac year of Rabbit. Its commemorative coin of Rabbit officially came out in January of 1987.

On the obverse of the gold coin, there engraved the People’s Republic of China in characters and the year of circulation. Its architecture design is the Yellow Crane Tower of Wuhan in Hubei Province, which is one of the three well-known towers in China. According to the legend, the Yellow Crane Tower was built in the Three Kingdoms Era (AD 223). Over the time, it was frequently destroyed and reconstructed so that no one could ever remember the number of times it rose and fell. From the historical documents, we know this extraordinary glorious Tower had attracted numerous well-known ancient Chinese poets, who visited here and left behind a lot of best-known poems. Among which, the “Yellow Crane Tower” poem by Cui Hao, a great poet of Tang Dynasty, has been the most popular one in China. Because of its magnificent design, the Yellow Crane Tower was considered as a fairyland in olden days and shared the reputation with “Yueyang Tower” in Yueyang, Hunan province and “Tengwang Pavilion” in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.

On the reverse, the picture of the Double Rabbit was originated from a famous Chinese painter Mr. Liu Jiyou’s artwork. For centuries, Chinese people have considered Rabbit as a symbol of luck, harmony and embodiment of immortality. The zodiac year of Rabbit is seen as a year of sweet joy, longevity and harvest.
The image on the coin vividly illustrated the Double Rabbit’s whisker and hair in great detail. With one stood upright and the other looked down, The picture effectively expressed Rabbit’s gentle personality.
